The principal stated, “For the first time in seven years since the abduction took place, SS3 students of the GSS have not sat their final exams here, but in 2021 our students wrote the WASSCE and NECO exams here in Chibok.

According to the Permanent Secretary, state Ministry of Education, Mohammed Abatcha, 45 blocks of classrooms, 11 blocks of science and ICT laboratories, six hostel blocks, a church and a mosque were all renovated.

In his address, Zulum said the state government would collaborate with the Federal Government to explore the possibility of ensuring the release of the remaining 115 students.

Covid-19: FG, Governors disagree over possible lockdown extension

The 14 days lockdown extension ordered by the federal government will end on Monday, April 26

– NGF has demanded the relaxation in Lagos, Ogun and the FCT

– Buhari will address the nation on Monday, April 26, to decide whether the lockdown would be extended or not

A report by The Nation indicates that the federal government is not disposed to the call by state governors for the relaxation of the current lockdown in the country over the coronavirus pandemic. reports that the newspaper said that sources said federal authorities are much in favour of partial restrictions in 33 of the 36 states with a view to mitigating the effects of the current lockdown in many parts of the country as against the relaxation being sought by the governors.

It was gathered that the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 which President Muhammadu Buhari relies on principally for advice on the pandemic is not in agreement with the governors that the government should soft-pedal in the FCT, Lagos, Ogun and Kano states.

The president who is billed to address the nation on Monday, April 27, is said to be weighing the options before him.

Members of the PTF were locked in a marathon meeting on Saturday, April 25, on the format of the partial restrictions to put in place in 33 states without fueling the spread of the coronavirus.

The task force considered the status report on COVID-19 spread in each state of the federation, the input of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and local and international technical evaluation of the pandemic in the country.

According to the report, a top-level source said: “We are inching towards partial restrictions in some states and the Federal Capital Territory. There is clamour for the partial lifting of the lockdown. This is why the PTF is meeting.

The chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi. Source: Depositphotos “The PTF has received many suggestions but we are being careful not to reverse the gains of the last few weeks in the battle against coronavirus.

One of the knotty issues is a recommendation by the NGF that there should be internal free movement but with restrictions on large gatherings and assemblies nationwide.

But the PTF took exception to partial lifting of the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos, Ogun and Kano states.” A member of the NGF was reported to have said that the forum was on the same page with the PTF on the input of the governors except for one recommendation.

The source said: “I don’t think they (the PTF on COVID-19) have serious objection except with internal free movement where they believe that we should not relax the lockdown in the epicentres of Lagos, Kano, FCT and Ogun. They may be right.

We have done our bit by presenting our input. You can contact the Chairman of PTF on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha for details.” The NGF in its letter on Friday to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, said: “Please refer to the above subject matter and to our teleconference meeting with the vice president on Wednesday, April 22.

Recall at that meeting it was agreed that the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) articulates the issues that it would want to be included in the next presidential pronouncement on COVID-19 so as to have a uniform and coordinated policy on COVID-19 at both the national and sub-national levels.

“Subject to Mr. President’s approval, the NGF would want the following incorporated into Mr. president’s pronouncements: inter-state lockdown excluding movement of essential supplies foods, beverages, medical and pharmaceuticals, petroleum supplies and agricultural products:

“Internal free movement but with restrictions on large gatherings and assemblies; overnight curfews, the lockdown of flights: and compulsory use of face masks/ coverings in the public.

My election brought peace to Alaba –Mbonu, chair, Fancy and Furniture

Fancy and Furniture has acquired the reputation as the bad leg of Alaba International Market because from time, its election has been characterized with violence and bloodshed.

However, the members of the association seem to have grown up because the election that brought the current executive Chairman, Hon. Mbonu, Udochukwu Godfrey was credible, free and fair and this has brought peace and tranquility in the market

In this interview, Mbonu said that the association because of its strategic location is the gateway to Alaba International Market, adding that whatever affects Fancy and Furniture rubs off on the entire market. Excerpts:

Fancy and Furniture has been notorious for violence, what do you think is the cause?

After I was elected into office, I sat back and tried to find out why our association has been noted with violence. From the research that I conducted, I discovered that a lot of the miscreants that were used by the leaders of the association in the past have quietly infiltrated the market as members and settled down, though without any serious thing that they are doing. You know that a tiger can hardly change its colour.

It is this miscreants that are still fomenting trouble in the market. I have made this known to the security agencies like the Police and DSS to assist us in flushing these criminal elements out of the market and they are doing this quietly. The Alaba Amalgamated Task Force also comes on a regular routine check and this is also yielding result.

That is why we now have peace in the market. However, there is another group that has formed a Whatsapp group with the intention of spreading wicked and malicious information against the leadership of the market and even the government.

The type of fake news that they are spreading has the capacity to cause breakdown of law and order, not only in the market, but in the country as a whole.

The elders council has warned them to stop this forthwith and I want to use this medium to let the world know that the message that they are spreading is not the position of Fancy and Furniture Dealers Association or Alaba International Market. I am appealing to the police and the other security agencies to trace, arrest and deal with them decisively.

You have been in office for few months now, what are your achievements?

Well, I started by renovating our secretariat. We have given it a face-lift. We have bought 25KVA generator to power the air conditioners in the secretariat. We have installed CCTV in the secretariat as a way of beefing up the security in the market. We also have in mind to install CCTV in all the strategic places in the market.

We have erected new gates to help the night guards and also want to put solar powered lights in all the strategic places to assist the night guards. When we were campaigning, we promised that we would run a transparent and accountable administration and since we come on board, every money that belongs to the association is being paid into the association’s account. These are just a little of the things that we hope to do for our people.

Do you need any assistance from the government?

Yes, a saying has it that to whom much is given, much is expected. Alaba  International is the biggest source of revenue for Ojo local  government. In fact, Alaba generates over 80 per cent of the revenue of Ojo local government. But we are not getting anything in commensurate to what we are giving.

Street traders have made the major road into the market impassable to vehicles. If you ask the street traders to leave the road, they would say that they are paying the local government, the Oba or the Baale, therefore, they would not leave the road.

This is affecting our business a lot because it can take you more than three hours to drive from Volkswagen bus stop to Alaba. So, we are appealing to the Council to chase the street traders away from the road. We are also appealing to them to build an industrial borehole for those who are cooking the food that we are eating in the market to avoid outbreak of diseases.

There is no clean water in the market .We have a site where it can be located .We are also in need of standard toilets and bathrooms because this is an international market. Another thing is that the drainage behind Fancy and Furniture to Alabarago is filled up. Ojo local government should help us to clean it for free flow of water and other things.

What advice do you have for the traders?

The advice that I have for them is to try to be law abiding. There are people who eat through crisis. They should avoid such people. Election into the executive of Fancy and Furniture has come and gone and those who lost should wait for another election time instead of trying to cause trouble in the market.

I want to use this medium to appeal to the police and the DSS to be on the alert for the trouble shooters in the market. We have zero tolerance for crisis in the market. We are very responsible men and women and those who want to be outlaws, the law enforcement agencies should try to be helping us in taking them to where they belong.

Dino is not a good representation of the people of Kogi West, said Adeyemi during his appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He added, “I am sure that no Nigerian would want to have somebody like Dino as a Senator. May Nigeria never have the kind of Dino as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Senator Adeyemi was returned elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the Kogi West senatorial district election after polling the highest number of votes.

Announced the results on Saturday last week in Kogi, the Returning Officer for the election Professor Olajide Lawal said Senator Adeyemi scored of 88,373 votes to beat Senator Melaye got 62,133 votes

Ambassador Rufus Aiyenigba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third in the poll with 659 votes and was trailed by John Olabode and Adeyemi Taiwo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Elements Progressive Party (NEPP who) garnered 262 and 119 votes respectively.

Senator Melaye has since rejected the outcome of the election, alleging that he was robbed while his life was in danger

But Senator Adeyemi denied the claims by his PDP rival, stressing that he got the mandate to return to the Senate at the free will of the people.

On The Street?

“Dino has never worked anywhere before, he was on the street. How can he claim to have been in politics before me,” the APC candidate questioned.

“I won the election based on the conviction of the Nigerian people, people of my senatorial district, and people of my state that the time had come for them to effect a change.”

Rather, he accused Senator Melaye of failing the people of the senatorial district and that he was voted out because the people wanted a change.

He added, “Dino did nothing since he has been there rather than buying cars and showing to the Nigerian people.

The defeat of Dino Melaye is a collective decision by people of the state – Yahaya Bello

Bello said this in reaction to the victory of Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the election.

Governor Bello said Adeyemi’s victory is the collective manifestation of the virtues of the people of Kogi West.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Onogwu Muhammed, on Sunday, December 1, in Lokoja, the governor said the mandate given to Adeyemi showed the people’s collective decision to move away from how they were represented in the immediate past to a more progressive representation that would bring development.

While commending the supporters of the APC and the people of the district for peacefully carrying out their roles of voting during the poll, the governor praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the manner it conducted the exercise.

Yahaya Bello also commended the security agents who ensured the poll was conducted peacefully.

The governor further promised that he would spend his second term developing every part of the state.

He said the APC was happy and grateful to the residents of the senatorial district for the way they conducted themselves and supported it during the poll.

”Now that we are having all three APC senators representing Kogi at the National Assembly, my administration would work in synergy with them and other APC lawmakers to attract more projects to our state, to make life more meaningful for its citizens,” the governor promised.

  • Apart from the NDDC issue, the Senate also frowned at the presidency over the failure of some key agencies of the government to submit audit reports for consideration

The Nation reports that the Senate insisted that it would not work on the budget unless the newly approved members of the board are inaugurated.

The president of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, reportedly instructed the Senate committee on NDDC to work only with the board members for the defence of t budget.

The Senate said it would not allow the members of the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC to defend the budget. Apart from the NDDC budget, the Senate is also frowning at the presidency over failure of some key agencies of the government to submit audit reports for consideration.

The Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) are some of the agencies that are reportedly yet to submit their audit reports .

The Senate, therefore, issued a seven-day ultimatum, warning that there would be dire consequences if the agencies fail to submit the reports within the stipulated period.

The ninth Senate, since its inauguration, has had a smooth relationship with the presidency, unliked the Bukola Saraki-led eighth Senate.

The NDDC crisis may be the first contentious issue that will test the relationship between the two arms of government.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has requested the Nigerian Senate to approve a foreign loan allegedly to the tune of $30 billion to the federal government.
Lawan read the president’s letter which contained the loan request during plenary on Thursday, November 28. Recall that the eighth Senate led by the former senate president, Bukola Saraki, rejected the loan request in 2016.

Though no reason was given for the rejection of the loan at the time, there have been concerns the state of Nigeria’s internal and external borrowing.

APC Member In Court Seeking Amendment of the Constitution To Allow Buhari To Contest For The 3rd Term.

Charles Enya, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi state, has filed a suit, seeking the amendment of the constitution to allow Nigeria’s failed President, Muhammadu Buhari to get additional term in office.

According to Daily Trust, Enya, who served as organising secretary to Buhari during the 2019 general election, filed the suit (FHC/AI/CS/90/19) before a federal high court in Abakiliki, the state capital.

Enya described the two-term tenure limit for presidents and governors as “discriminatory”. He asked Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, as well as the national assembly, to remove constitutional clauses hindering elected presidents and governors from seeking a third term in office.

The defendants in the suit include Mohammed Sani-Omolori, clerk of the national assembly; the national assembly; and Malami.Section 137 (1)(b) of the 1999 constitution (as amended) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, provides that “a person shall not be qualified for election to the office of President if he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections”. While section 182 (1)(b) states that “no person shall be qualified for election to the office of Governor of a State if he has been elected to such office at any two previous elections”.

The APC member is seeking possible expungement of both sections. According to him, “that section 137(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999 (as amended) restricting the president to only two terms of four years each, is inoperative by virtue of its discriminatory nature in relation to the executive and legislative branches of government in Nigeria, and therefore null and void and thus inapplicable”.

He is seeking an “order of the court nullifying and setting aside section 137(1)(b) and 182(1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). And directing the first and second defendants to delete and expunge sections 137(1)(b) and 182(1)(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (as amended).”Meanwhile, Buhari has dismissed reports that he is interested in a third term.

“I’m not going to make the mistake of attempting a third term. Besides the age, I swore by the holy book that I would go by the constitution and the constitution said two terms,” the president had said at the national executive council meeting of his party earlier in the week.

Thunder reportedly kills 17 cows in Osun state

A massive thunder strike has reportedly killed 17 cows in the Iba of Ifelodun local government area of Osun state.

The New Telegraph reports that the thunder strike occurred on Friday evening, November 22, when the cows returned from grazing. The mysterious incident was confirmed by head of the Fulanis, Chief Jimoh Saliu, who disclosed that the incident happened at a place called Gaa-fulani, their abode in the town.

He said some of the Fulanis who were affected by the thunder have been taken for receiving medical treatment in undisclosed hospitals.

Meanwhile, the monarch of the town, Oba Adekunle Oyedeji said he, with the cooperation of the fulani community in the town are on top of the situation, Vanguard reports.

He urged owners of the cows to burn the animals to avoid an epidemic. He urged calm among indigenes and residents of the town. The community in a statement signed by Prince Gbolagunte Bamigbola said the fulani and people of the town have been living harmoniously together.

“The people of Iba, have over the years been living harmoniously with Fulani natives living in our domain.

The death of the cows belonging to the Fulani cattle rearers living among us was a natural occurrence occasioned by a thunder that struck in the town,” the statement read.

It was reported that the cows that were struck to death by thunderstorm had earlier grazed on a farmland around Apala area of the town before the natural phenomenon struck.

This reported thunder incident comes after a similar report on Saturday, September 21, claimed that a bolt of strange lightning struck the Oke Owa Ijare community in Ifedore local government area of Ondo state killing 36 cows.

Residents of the community said the cows were struck dead following an alleged desecration of a sacred shrine of an ancient deity by some herders who invaded the area with the animals.

There were reports that the resident also said the incident happened on a rocky elevation held sacred by the community members.

Air Peace: I’m not afraid to stand trial — Onyema reacts to fraud allegations

Recent indictment against Air Peace boss, Allen Onyema, by the United States Justice Department over perceived dubious financial transactions to the tune of $20 million, has been generating reactions from all quarters both within and outside the country.

While some were quick to condemn the CEO of the Aviation company, others however, expressed shock and wondered why a person who was recently praised for his kind gesture toward stranded Nigerians in South Africa a few months ago, would end up being stained with such allegations.

As reactions continue to pour, Air Peace CEO, Allen Onyema, has finally reacted to the allegations of bank and money laundering leveled against him.

In a brief statement on Saturday, Onyema said all the allegations “are false and are in no way in line with my character as a person and as a business man.”

He denied any illegalities in the conduct of his business saying due processes and proper channels were duly followed including the transfer of funds through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the purchase of aircrafts.

He said, “I can confirm to you that all allegations are false and are in no way in line with my character as a person and as a business man whose only aim has been to build Nigeria and improve well-being.

As the press statement clearly stated, these are indictments that only contain charges. I am innocent of all charges and the US government will find NO dirt on me because I have never conducted business with any illegalities.

“Be rest assured that I also have my lawyers on this and these mere allegations will be refuted.

“I never laundered money in my life, neither have I committed bank fraud anywhere in the world. Every Kobo I transferred to the US for aircraft purchase went through the Central Bank of Nigeria LC regime and all were used for the same purpose. The American companies that received the funds are still in business. I never took a penny from any US bank or Nigerian bank. I am willing to defend my innocence in the US courts.”

I get N5m monthly as pension from England – Fashanu backs Tammy over Eagles snub

– John Fashanu says he still gets N5m pension from England

– The former striker played for the Three Lions just twice in 1989

– Fashanu claims convincing Nigerian players abroad to play for the Super Eagles will be tough

– The ex-Aston Villa forward says the welfare package offered by the country’s FA will continue to scare the foreign-based players from playing for their motherland

Former England striker John Fashanu believes the Nigeria Football Federation will continue to find it difficult to convince some foreign-based players to play for the country.

The 57-year-old insisted the welfare package of England’s FA is a major reason for their choice of consideration when considering which team to play for.

Fashanu made just two appearances for the Three Lions but the ex-English football star reveals he still gets about N5 million every month in pension for the services he rendered three decades ago.

Recently, the NFF failed to get Chelsea duo of Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, as they pledged their allegiance to England.

Before now, the country’s football administrators had also tried poaching Jordan Ibe and Dele Alli but all four turned down an opportunity to wear the green and white jersey.

Fashanu, however, told Daily Trust that: “Till today, I still get my benefits, my pensions. I get N5m monthly as pensions for being an ex-footballer in England and I am now in my 50s.

Tammy knows why he hasn’t played for the Super Eagles and it’s because there is more financial benefits playing for England, there is more glory and less wahala.

“Why do we ask the boy to play for Nigeria and torture him? We need to step up. Tammy is a massive miss for Nigeria.

“Nobody went to London to talk to him and explain to him the benefits of playing for his motherland.

And when you hear what happened to Kanu Nwankwo, Jay Jay Okocha, did anybody come out to defend him over his tax bills, did anybody come out to defend Kanu when he had issues with his hotel,” he asked.

It was earlier reported that Chelsea star Tammy Abraham finally grabbed his first goal for England in their 7-0 drubbing of Montenegro in their Euro 2020 qualifier at Wembley Stadium.

The 22-year-old was introduced into the game in the 57th minute after replacing Harry Kane and recorded his name on the score sheet in the 84th minute.

Abraham tapped in from close range after connecting with Jadon Sancho’s cross from the left flank to seal the victory for Gareth Southgate’s men after the regulation period.

Dino Melaye will never return to senate, Oshiohmole vows

The All Progressives Congress, APC, National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has declared that there was no hope that Dino Melaye would return to the Senate as the Senator representing Kogi West again.

Oshiomhole spoke at the APC Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party’s national secretariat on Friday.

He boasted that the senator representing Kogi West would next weekend, join the other 15 National Assembly members that rebelled against the party.

“Mr President, I also believe, it is significant to point out that those who rebel against this party, who sought to bring us down, who decamped at a critical moment, believing that their defection would destabilise us and we would have no enough time to make up, 16 of them (would have regretted their action).“By the special grace of God, Nigerian electorate have chosen to punish them with their PVCs and their ballot papers. They were all voted out, and APC senators were voted in to replace them. The electorate also elected more members of House of Representatives on the APC platform.

“There is one that is still struggling but as it is, he is at 20,000 feet below ground level and he’s hoping that there would be a miracle that would bring him to ground level and climb the tree to the Senate but by the special grace of God, under your leadership, that deficit, there will be no miracles in the election, particularly when they are free and fair.

“God willing, by the end of the month, when the re-run in Kogi State would be done, the 16th stubborn one will go the way of the other 15.“That for me is remarkable because the message is clear that gradually but steadily when anyone who went to UAE… in this case, those who rode on the back of Mr President to win election and turned round to monetise it and use that same power to attack not only the Presidency but to attack the institution of our party. I think those lessons will linger,” he said.

Air Peace CEO, Allen Onyema, Indicted For Bank Fraud And Money Laundering In US.

Allen Onyema, the chairman of Air Peace, has been indicted in the US for bank fraud and money laundering activity during the course of his airplane purchase. According to reports, the scheme was said to have involved the movement of more than $20 million from Nigeria through his US bank accounts without due process. Also, Ejiroghene Eghagha(Air Peace’s Chief of Administration and Finance) was charged alongside with him. This was contained in a series of statements which was released by U.S. Attorneys.

Between 2010 and 2018, over $44.9 million was allegedly transferred into his Atlanta-based accounts from foreign sources. In years following the founding of Air Peace, he traveled to the United States and purchased multiple airplanes for the airline.

Beginning in approximately May 2016, Onyema, together with Eghagha, allegedly used a series of export letters of credit to causing banks to transfer more than $20 million into Atlanta-based bank accounts controlled by Onyema.

The letters of credit were purported to fund the purchase of five separate Boeing 737 passenger planes by Air Peace. However, the supporting documents were fake. After Onyema received the money, he allegedly laundered over $16 million of the proceeds of the fraud by transferring it to other accounts.

Onyema and Eghagha were indicted on November 19, 2019, on one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, three counts of bank fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit credit application fraud, and three counts of credit application fraud.

Any request by Buhari to NASS, good for Nigeria — Lawan

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday said any request from President Muhammadu Buhari would make Nigeria a better place, and such would be acted on “expeditiously.”

Lawan spoke when the Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Itse Sagay visited him in his office on Thursday.

Sagay had called for the timely passage of the Special Criminal Court and other similar bills, saying such would  help the anti-corruption war and ensure that the fight was successfully won with speed and energy.

He also appealed to the Senate to consider the confirmation of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu.

Responding, Lawan said, “This is a new Senate. Going by our rules and I believe that goes for the House of Reps too, any issue that was not concluded in the last National Assembly, will have to start all over again.

“So, as far as we are concerned, those bills will have to come again and start to go through the process from the very beginning.

“We are ready. In fact, we are in a haste if those bills are ready for us to start working on them.”

Lawan said there was no request before the Senate for the confirmation of the acting chairman of the EFCC.

“I want to assure you that any request that comes from Mr President is a request that will make Nigeria a better place in terms of appointments or legislation.

“When such request comes, the Senate will act expeditiously to ensure that we play our part in the confirmation or passing of legislation appropriately.”

Apc reacts to the brutal killing of PDP women leader

APC Condemns Death Of PDP Women Leader Burnt To Death By Thugs.

The ruling All Progressives Congress APC has condemned the burning to death of the woman leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) woman leader, Salome Abuh in Kogi state. The ruling party also condemned the destruction of property in the state. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the party condoled with the family of the deceased and others affected by the post-election violence.

“While the Kogi police command says the killing was as a result of a reprisal attack, we urge the Kogi people to ensure this does not escalate. We are aware that the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has already directed law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

“The APC abhors violence and other criminalities which sadly continue to plague our electioneering process. We urge partisans to see the election as a democratic contest and not a do or die affair that we play with our lives. We pray that the culprits are caught and the full weight of the law is brought to bear on them.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has advised partisans that are not satisfied with the results of governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states to seek redress in court and shun violence. We must all heed this call”, the party counseled.

I lost to Andy Ruiz due to lack of experience but he can’t beat me twice – Anthony Joshua

British boxer, Anthony Joshua has come out to speak on his first career defeat at the hands of Mexican-American champion, Andy Ruiz Jr, saying it was due to a lack of experience and he is now a “smarter” fighter.

Ruiz Jr produced one of boxing’s biggest upsets when he dethroned the previously undefeated world heavyweight champion with a seventh-round stoppage at New York’s Madison Square Garden in June.

It wasn’t burnout. The issues I faced in the last camp, it’s just down to lack of experience. Even though it was at a high level, we were still finding experience. Andy Ruiz is good but I don’t think he should beat me twice.

I used to hear guys say you have to take a loss and I would think ‘why’? Now I can understand it and know what it takes. I have more understanding now and my ears are open to new information so that’s making me smarter as a fighter,” Joshua told BBC in a new interview.

The WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight title rematch dubbed the ‘Clash on the Dunes’, will take place in Saudi Arabia on December 7 after former Olympic Champion Joshua triggered a rematch clause.

“The blessing is I have a second chance and here we are,” the 30-year-old said.

Sophia however, was not having it as she in turn, took to her page to throw shade. She accused women of being their own biggest haters, warning who most people assume was Amanda, not to get on her bad side.

Reacting to speculations that she was shading Sophia, Amanda took to social media to deny it. See post below:

Internet celebrity, Mompha, sues EFCC, demands N5m

Internet celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, alleging unlawful detention and a violation of his rights.

He was arrested by the EFCC in October on allegation of cybercrime and money laundering.

In the suit he filed before the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere, Mompha is urging the court to award N5m against the EFCC for detaining him beyond the constitutionally-allowed period without being charged to court.

He prayed the court to order the EFCC to either immediately charge him to court or release him if it was not ready to charge him to court.

His lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), said his client, as a Nigerian, was entitled to the protection of his fundamental rights under sections 34, 35 and 36 of the 1999 constitution.

Oyewole said his client was arrested on October 19 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja by the EFCC which accused him of money laundering.

He said the remand order which the EFCC obtained to keep Mompha had since expired and he ought to be released.

In a 20-paragraph supporting affidavit, one Olumuyiwa Ajidagba claimed that “The applicant (Mompha) has been subjected to physical, mental and psychological torture in the underground cell of the EFCC’s detention centre.”

The court has yet to fix any date to hear the case.

The EFCC had said in October that it arrested the internet celebrity in Abuja on his way to Dubai, based on “actionable cross-border intelligence received from collaborative law enforcement agencies about his alleged involvement in the criminal activities.”

The anti-graft agency said, “Ismaila, who allegedly perpetrates his fraudulent activities under the guise of being a bureau de change operator, is always seen with his little son flaunting huge amount of foreign currencies on his social media platforms.

“Investigations have also revealed that Ismaila is only using the BDC business he jointly owned with his siblings as a decoy to launder his proceeds of crime.”

Nigerians will miss me when I leave office — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari may not be considered worthy of a spot in the good books of many Nigerians, his resolve however, to ensure that his promises are fully fulfilled, is still very much strong.

The President did acknowledge the numerous challenges facing the country under his very watch, but insists he will be remembered as a president who kept his word by leaving behind a country many would be proud of.

He spoke on Tuesday when he hosted members of the Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) led by its chairman, Omoniyi Akinsiju, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari told his guests that “our government continues to grow in strength and will place a firm foundation for future generations. The task ahead for the four years will require a formidable team.”

He described the BMO as a key communication in the information management asset to his administration, telling the members that “your efforts have been commendable. I cannot thank you enough for your sacrifices during the first part of our journey.

“It is not an easy job to sell the administration’s services, we are doing unpopular things and facing powerful individuals and taking on invested interest who are accustomed to the corrupt era.

“But we must do things the right way, if we promised change then we must deliver it. This is regardless of whose interest is touched. There must be a manifest departure from the old order.”

A suspected internet fraudster, Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha has ifiled a Fundamental Rights Enforcement Suit before the Lagos High Court  to challenge his continued detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In the application dated November 14 and brought pursuant to Section 34-36 and Section 46(1) & (2) of the 1999 Constitution, Mompha is asking the court to declare that his continued detention since October 22, on the orders of a Lagos Magistrate Court which order expired on November 4, is unlawful and constitutes a gross violation of his right to personal liberty.

He also wants the court to declare that the failure of the EFCC to charge and arraign him in court is unconstitutional.

He is therefore seeking an order of the court directing the EFCC to release him from custody, unconditionally.

He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC or any person acting on its behalf from arresting and detaining him in relation to the subject matter of this suit without recourse to the due process of law.

Mompha is claiming damages in the sum of N5million against the EFCC for what he calls, his unlawful detention.

The Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, on Thursday presented the 2020 budget to the state House of Assembly.

The budget estimates tagged budget of Olimpotic meristemasis is pegged at N1,100,167,507.09.

Giving a breakdown of the budget, Ayade said N911 billion representing 82% of the estimates will be for capital estimates while N188 billion representing 17.2% will be spent on recurrent expenditure.

He said N44 billion was allocated to the health sector, N38 billion for education, N22 billion for agriculture while N85 billion will go to the New Cities Project.

On taxation, the governor said no nation taxes its people to prosperity and so daily taxes will be abolished for low-income earners including traders and civil servants who earn below N100,000 per month will be exempted from taxes.

He said a flat monthly tax will rather be paid by low-income earners while the government will continue to legalise hawking by creating some hawking bases in the state to assist low-income earners.

He said the tax regime in the state beginning from next year will become softer as a means of boosting the income of low-income earners and high-income earners will be the ones who pay more tax.

He added that agro-based industries under construction in the state will come on stream next year and the government hopes to earn about N380 billion from the industries.

He said the budget looks unachievable but his administration is determined to actualise it and sought the cooperation of the legislature.

In his response, Eteng Williams, Speaker of the State Assembly promised to give the necessary support and assured that the budget will be approved before the end of the year.

IPPIS: Buhari is becoming dictatorial – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reacted to the federal government’s order on Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS).

The chairman of ASUU in the University of Ibadan, Deji Omole, said that the government’s directive for members of the union to take part in the system is dictatorial – Omole accused federal government of being afraid of negotiation which is obtainable in a democratic setting.

The Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS) directed by President Muhammadu Buhari has been described by the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the University of Ibadan, Professor Deji Omole, as dictatorial.

Omole said that the order that members of ASUU should move to campuses so as to begin enrolment in the IPPIS is a mindless disregard for the law on the part of the federal government in a democratic setting as Nigeria.

He said that the union cannot be subdued by persons who are bent on breaking the laws of the country, adding that it is worrisome that the federal government is afraid of negotiating with ASUU.

Omole said: “The government’s pronouncement to forcefully enrol university workers is an act of violence against the university system.

It is worrisome for a government under democratic dispensation to resort to force rather than dialogue. “Let the government come back to negotiation’s table and let’s discuss the grey areas. Forceful enlistment will not solve the problem.

The chairman of the union in Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Rabi’u Nasiru, on Monday, November 4, said that ASUU opposed the system in an effort to save public higher institutions from collapsing.

Scientists discover how to ‘upload knowledge to your brain

Feeding knowledge directly into your brain, just like in sci-fi classic The Matrix, could soon take as much effort as falling asleep, scientists believe.

Researchers claim to have developed a simulator which can feed information directly into a person’s brain and teach them new skills in a shorter amount of time, comparing it to “life imitating art”.

They believe it could be the first steps in developing advanced software that will make Matrix-style instant learning a reality.

In the neo-noir sci-fi classic, protagonist Neo is able to learn kung fu in seconds after the martial art is ‘uploaded’ straight to his brain.

Researchers from HRL Laboratories, based in California, say they have found a way to amplify learning, only on a much smaller scale than seen in the Hollywood film.

They studied the electric signals in the brain of a trained pilot and then fed the data into novice subjects as they learned to pilot an aeroplane in a realistic flight simulator.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, found that subjects who received brain stimulation via electrode-embedded head caps improved their piloting abilities and learnt the task 33 per cent better than a placebo group.

Our system is one of the first of its kind. It’s a brain stimulation system,” explained Dr Matthew Phillips.
“It sounds kind of sci-fi, but there’s large scientific basis for the development of our system.

“The specific task we were looking at was piloting an aircraft, which requires a synergy of both cognitive and motor performance.

“When you learn something, your brain physically changes. Connections are made and strengthened in a process called neuro-plasticity.

“It turns out that certain functions of the brain, like speech and memory, are located in very specific regions of the brain, about the size of your pinky.”

Dr Matthews believes that brain stimulation could eventually be implemented for tasks like learning to drive, exam preparation and language learning

“What our system does is it actually targets those changes to specific regions of the brain as you learn,” he added.
“The method itself is actually quite old. In fact, the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago used electric fish to stimulate and reduce pain.

“Even Ben Franklin applied currents to his head, but the rigorous, scientific investigation of these methods started in the early 2000s and we’re building on that research to target and personalise a stimulation in the most effective way possible.

Your brain is going to be very different to my brain when we perform a task. What we found is … brain stimulation seems to be particularly effective at actually improving learning.”

Meanwhile, a recent study found that intelligent people are more easily distracted at work.

Reps asks tertiary institutions to stop collecting acceptance fees

The House of Representatives has called on all tertiary institutions in the country to stop collecting acceptance fees from newly admitted students.

Honourable Chinedu Emeka Martins who moved the motion on the floor of the House during Wednesday’s plenary said one of the major factors contributing to lack of access to tertiary education was the “predatory admission policies” particularly the non-refundable “Acceptance Fees” being collected by the institutions

He lamented that, a National University Commission (NUC) data revealed that, out of the country’s population of over 180 million, only 2 million, representing 1 percent of the population are enrolled in universities.

According to him, the proportion of the people attending universities is grossly minimal compared to the larger population unlike what is obtained in other countries. “Additional Data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) shows that, between 2010 and 2015, of the 10 million applicants that sought admissions into tertiary institutions, only 26 percent gained admissions, indicating that about 75 percent of the applicants fail

Proposed death penalty for hate speech is extreme —Faleke

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep James Faleke (APC-Lagos), has disagreed with the death sentence for hate speech as proposed by a bill currently before the Senate.

In an interview with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Faleke said though there was need to curb hate speech, the death penalty was, however, taking it to the extreme.

The lawmaker, who represents Ikoyi Federal Constituency of Lagos State, however, threw his weight behind the death penalty for terrorism and kidnapping.

“It is the area of punishment that we should be concerned about.

“I think we need to have a law on hate speech because it can cause war, crisis and disharmony in the country.

“Your right to free speech must be within the ambit of the law to bring harmony and good relationship among the people.

“But I will not support a death penalty for hate speech.

“For kidnapping and terrorism, I support death sentence as passed by some state assemblies,” he said.

The Hate Speech Bill, which passed first reading last week at the Senate, was sponsored by the Deputy Chief Whip, Senator Sabi Abdullahi.

Abdullahi said it was the judge that should determine the punishment for offenders if the bill is passed into law.

He said as far as the issue of death-by-hanging was concerned, as spelled out in Section 33 of the Constitution, it must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

Acting Spokesperson for the Senate, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, had said that when the bill gets to second reading, senators would be given the opportunity to speak on the matter.

Akwashiki said the upper chamber of the National Assembly would scrutinise the bill to remove whatever they perceive as offensive and insert what would protect the interest of Nigerians.

Just days before Burna Boy was set to perform in South Africa, organisers have announced that he has been withdrawn and the concerts in Cape Town and Tshwane cancelled.

In a media statement issued today, organisers said that after extensive engagement with Burna Boy’s management team, they had decided to withdraw the Nigerian artist from the concert and cancel the shows.

They said the decision to cancel the shows came after warnings of a shutdown from a group of artists and event organisers under the umbrella of Tshwane Entertainment Collective.

The decision to cancel the Africans Unite Concert comes after the call from the Tshwane Entertainment Collective to boycott the Africans Unite concert in Tshwane.

With the increasing threats of violence from other unfortunate segments of the public and without any government intervention, Phambili Media and Play Network Africa were prompted to take the threats and warnings seriously, as the safety of all artists and attendees could not be guaranteed.

Jose Mourinho appointed Tottenham head coach

Former Chelsea and Manchester United boss replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked on Tuesday

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new Tottenham head coach until the end of the 2023 season.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked on Tuesday.

Negotiations between Spurs and Mourinho – who had been out of work since leaving Old Trafford in December – intensified over the last few days and concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

His first game will be at the London Stadium on Saturday as Spurs travel to take on West Ham in the Premier League.

Pochettino left Tottenham with the club 14th in the Premier League and having won just five matches all season.

Chairman Daniel Levy said he was “reluctant” to sack the Argentine, but explained the decision had to be made in the “club’s best interests”.

“If Jose wants to get into top-level management, you’ve only got to look at his CV,” he told Sky Sports News. “People question the Manchester United job, but his career as a whole has been hugely successful, and that’s one thing Tottenham have lacked at the moment.

“As well as Pochettino has done, they haven’t quite got over the line to get a trophy, and that’s what Jose Mourinho does when he goes to a club.”

Redknapp: Jose appointment intriguing

Former Spurs midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Mourinho could clash with the frugal Levy.

“Is he the right fit for Tottenham? It’s interesting, as Jose likes to spend money, and Daniel doesn’t, and Jose would want to get some really big names into the building,” explained Redknapp.

“He likes experience, and isn’t really one for playing young players, but you can’t argue with what he’s done in the game.”

Liberian lawmakers cut their salaries to save money for citizens in 2020 budget

– Liberia’s lawmakers have agreed to cut away 30 per cent of their total earnings in the country’s 2020 budget

– The lawmakers said the move is to help the West African nation meet the important IMF Standard

– The actions of the Liberian lawmakers occurred about one month after Nigerians sued their own senate for proposing to buy N5.5bn worth of cars its principal officers

Reports in Monrovia say federal lawmakers of Liberia have passed the country’s 2020 budget with massive cuts to their salaries and allowances.

According to FrontPage Africa, a magazine in the West African country, the lawmakers, in a selfless move on Tuesday, October 1, voted unanimously to have their earnings slashed.

The lawmakers cut the proposed budget by the executive arm led by President George Weah, a former international football player, by almost $7million.

Weah had proposed $532.9m but the lawmakers approved $526 million after cutting their own earnings and those of the officials of the judiciary.

The budget committee said it came up with the reductions in order to help the country meet the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Standard.

The action of the Liberian lawmakers is reminiscent of that of the Italian parliament which is set to reduce the number of the country’s federal lawmakers in the bid to save funds.

The Italian lower legislative chamber approved a bill to reduce the number of the members of the parliament from 630 to 400 and senators from 315 to 200 in line with a promise made by the country’s main party, the Five Star Movement.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the senate was sued by citizens and some civil rights groups lik Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, BudgIT and Enough is Enough over plans to spend N5.550 billion (approximately $15.3m) on vehicles for its principal officers.

The suit against the senate was filed at the federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

I was assaulted by my schoolmates because of a “boyfriend” – Assaulted FUTA student speaks

Over the weekend, a video of some students of the Federal University of Technology Akure FUTA in Ondo state, assaulting a female student surfaced online. The video sparked an outrage online with many Nigerians calling for the expulsion of the students from the school. In an interview with Sahara Reporters, the victim, Boluwatife Adekunle, said she was assaulted by her colleagues for revealing how one of their boyfriends tried to have an affair with her.

In her words

“The whole issue started few weeks ago. I and one of the ladies in the video called ‘Faith’ were roommates in a hostel outside campus. Her boyfriend began asking me out but I felt it was not proper for me to date him. I rejected his advances. But instead of him to leave me alone, the guy kept disturbing me, so I had to report him to Faith because I don’t want trouble. Before then, I had been having some issues with Faith as she had been living a wayward life on campus which I didn’t like.

“From that point, she started seeing me as talking bad about her to people around our area. During this period, her boyfriend kept pestering me to date him but I refused. Instead of Faith to caution her boyfriend, she accused me of planning to sleep with her man. On the day that I was assaulted, she invited me to a room in one of the hostels and boyfriend and other ladies were inside the place already.

“Immediately I entered the place, they locked the door and asked me to kneel down while the guy was asking if he ever asked me for a date. Since I refused to kneel down, they began to beat me and also tried to strip me naked. They used a stick to hit me on my head and punched me on my face. The guy used horse whip to flog me several times.

“They said they would make sure they disgraced me on campus, I pleaded with them but they refused and I was about to faint when they stopped beating me. As I speak, I feel pains all over my body due to the beatings. Their plan was to kill me. I want them arrested and face the consequences of their action.”

Boluwatife’s mother, Mrs Florence Adekunle, says all she wants is justice for her daughter

“I was in the church on Sunday when her brother called me that they saw Boluwatife in a video and she was beaten up. I can’t imagine how friends would treat a fellow student like this. I’m aware that the school authority and even the police have taken up the matter, all the same we want justice.”

Spokesperson for the institution, Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the indicted students have been suspended. He gave the names of the suspended students as Popoola Olaniyi Agboola (300L), Oluwadare Faith Tobiloba (200L), Nandi Yohanna Jessica (200L), Ajuwon Tolani Emmanuella (100L), Emmanuel Funmilayo Taiwo (100L) and Alao Olabimpe Cecilia (100L).“As a consequence of their suspension, they are precluded from all academic and related activities indefinitely and barred from the university and its precincts forthwith. At the conclusion of ongoing investigations, the law of the university as contained in the handbook and oath of matriculation which all students are made to sign and subscribe to, will be visited on those found culpable” Adebanjo saidCommenting on the incident, the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adie Undie, said the police is currently investigating the incident.

‘Nigerians need to embrace homosexuality’ – Actress Ashionye Raccah

Nigerian Actress and singer, Ashionye Michelle Raccah admonished Nigerians to stop finding faults in homosexuality.Ashionye says that has homosexuality is not a disease, hence the need for Nigerians to end discrimination against homosexuals. Ashionye said this to QedTV at the premiere of Funmi Iyanda’s movie, Walking with Shadows. Speaking at the premiere of the movie which is about a married man whose wife later found out he was gay, Ashionye said people need to realize that a person is not made to be gay but is born gay.“It’s high time we began to accept every human being irrespective of their sexuality. I’m a human being whether I am straight or gay. It’s high time we began to realise that we are basically just one and we shouldn’t judge. I know we have this 14 year sentencing in Nigeria but then again you can’t change a person whoever he or she is.“Some people say being gay is made, you become gay. I don’t believe that. I believe someone who is gay is born that way, that’s who the person is, and it is not a disease. It is not something to be afraid of. It is not something to judge” she said.Asked if she will accept her child if he or she grows up to be gay, Ashionye respondedIf you are born straight, that’s who you are. If I am born lesbian, that’s who I am. I did not become lesbian. Like I said, it’s not a disease. I have people close to me, family and close friends, who are actually homosexual men and queer women and I absolutely love them. To be honest, I have a lot of male friends who are actually homosexuals and they give the best advice. They love me for who I am and I absolutely love them for who they are”.When asked if she supports the repeal of the 14 year jail penalty for any homosexual caught in the act, she said”Yes! Why should we judge people for who they are. Why should we crucify people for who they are. Like I said, it’s not a disease. It is not a crime. If a man or woman is being judged for being queer or being gay, then why am I not being judged for being straight?

‘Go to court, Buhari tells PDP, others, as Bello wins

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday advised the Peoples Democratic Party and other parties that were not satisfied with the results of governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states to seek redress in court.

Buhari gave this advice shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared the Kogi State Governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Yahaya Bello,  winner of the Saturday governorship election in the state.

The APC candidate in Bayelsa State, David Lyon, had on Sunday won the governorship poll in the state. Lyon polled 352,552 votes to defeat his closest rival, Senator Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party, who got 143,172 votes.

Buhari, in a statement by his media aide, Femi Adesina, congratulated  Bello and  Lyon, for winning Saturday’s governorship polls.

While he described Lyon’s victory as “impressive”, the President said Bello’s election was “a race well run and a victory well won.” Buhari asked those who were not happy with the outcome of the polls in the two states to go to court to seek redress.

The President commended the APC and the people of the states, who exercised their civic rights in a peaceful manner, “notwithstanding the pockets of unrest recorded in some locations.”

He stated, ‘Violence during elections vitiates our commitment to demonstrate to the world and upcoming generation that we are a people capable of electing leaders in a peaceful and orderly manner”, the statement quoted him as saying.

Pockets of violence sponsored by violent politicians

It added, “He notes that while officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies did their best within the ambit of the law to ensure free, fair and credible elections, it is unfortunate that pockets of unrest, mostly sponsored by desperate politicians, were recorded during the polls.

Nigeria is our biggest market, says Moet & Chandon ambassador

Pierre-Louis Araud is the Global Brand Ambassador for Moët & Chandon, and a connoisseur of luxury and celebration. In his second official trip to Nigeria last week, he talks about the brand’s efforts at deepening its presence in the Nigerian market through new product offerings and what makes Nigeria a destination for such a luxury drink. In this interview with FEMI ADEKOYA, he says Moët & Chandon has been a pioneer and an innovator in the art of celebration, a reality he describes as, resonating with Nigerians’ passion for celebrations.

What brings you to Nigeria at this moment? Is this your first visit?
I am to here to share the magic of Moët & Chandon with Nigerian people. I am not sure they need me to enjoy their wine because Moët & Chandon is very hot in Nigeria, and that makes it easier to share the values of Moët & Chandon, and to explain the story behind this company.

I also learnt Moët & Chandon is coming with new products into the market. Can you tell us about the product?

Moët & Chandon is in Nigeria with a range of products of MOËT IMPÉRIAL, MOËT Nectar Rose IMPÉRIAL, and MOËT NECTAR IMPÉRIAL, which are working very well. We noticed the demand for the high end products and top range products; hence these are the reasons why we chose to propose them as well the new comer in our range of products that we call MCIII.

MC stands for Moët & Chandon, while the Roman numeral III reflects the three centuries that span this maison’s existence; it actually symbolises three different techniques, or as the company refers to them, “stratums”—of this wine’s creation. MCIII is the result of aging and combining a number of Moët’s best Grand Vintage wines into what results in an ultra-luxurious, non-vintage Champagne.

The maturation of these various vintages has been divided into a trilogy of aging vessels encompassing wood, glass, and metal. This innovative process took Moët’s Chef de Cave Benoît Gouez and his team of winemakers more than 20 years to perfect.

The quintessence of richly diverse forms of wine maturation, MCIII is an assemblage of fine vintage wines aged in stainless steel vats and oak casks combined with more mature vintage champagne aged on lees in glass bottles.

It is champagne that enjoyed a net return in the space of three months. It is cutting-edge champagne and as Nigeria being the most important market for us here in Africa, we really want to be there.

What do you think might be responsible for the huge sales of the drink in the market despite being a luxury product?

I think in Nigeria, you have people who love to enjoy life. We love to party, we love to stay bright and Moët   & Chandon is the ultimate brand for celebrations.

The drink is at the heart of all the celebrations in life. It goes beyond a spray of champagne. We see that Nigerian people are successful and the drink resonates with them. Moët & Chandon is a product of success and glamour.

Either during the day or at night you will see that Nigerians like to party and enjoy life. Nigeria is really a market for our products.

Why the interest in just three markets in Africa – Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa?
Our interest is not limited to just three markets.

For instance, just before coming to Nigeria, I was in Abidjan, where I spent a few days but it is also important that we go to our main markets in Africa. There’s a whole lot of deep interest in African market.

Beyond sports celebrations where the effervescence of the champagne is felt.  Are you exploring other areas where your products can actually be also experienced?
Beyond parties, we have weddings. Weddings are big in Nigeria.

There is also a business of having Moët & Chandon for lunch or dinner, for people who appreciate it. Moët & Chandon is champagne; it means it is not just sparkling wine. There is a big difference between champagne and sparkling wine, as it is very exclusive and demanding while making them. You can only make champagne only in Champagne.

It is not produced widely as it is produced in a very specific region at the heart of France. In this region, all these have to come from this small region. A lot of exclusivity and details go into the production of champagne.

What are our expectations for the new product in the Nigerian market and how would you assess the performance of other products in the market?
In terms of what we want for our products in Nigeria, our products should be the brand of choice for the Nigerian people. We really want to be on this side of the Nigerian people, and we want to continue to be on their side. We know the market and that is why we are going deeply into it. Of course we have competitors.

In terms of the market share, where would you put yourself in Nigeria?

At the highest point. Nigerian people love our brands. Being at the highest point is a proof of that. We will continue to share our values and showcase that our product is really for them.

Beyond the premium market are you looking at anything to cater to the mass market?
In fact, we are looking at a situation where more Nigerians are able to afford our products. We really expect that the economy will continue to improve because it will be good for people.

At the end, it will be good for our business. You know most of the players in terms of sparkling wines, spirits and champagnes sometimes, have not been able to produce wines this way. Moët & Chandon before being  wine, it is champagne, and champagne is a luxury product. We are always there to make people dream, have high desires and purchasing ability. We hope that with a better economy, the purchasing power of consumers will rise

Two brothers arrested for ‘scamming’ Yahoo boys

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), says it has arrested two brothers for extorting cyber-fraudsters with the promise of shielding them from arrest by the Commission.

A statement by the Ibadan zonal office of the anti-graft agency says the siblings Olatunji Joe Beyioku, 35, and Oluwayomi Beyioku, 37, who were acting like operatives of the commission in the state were arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun, on Friday, November 15, 2019, during a sting operation.

“EFCC operatives had embarked on discreet investigations into the activities of the suspects when it was discovered that they were in the habit of the extorting ‘Yahoo Boys’ to help them evade arrest by the EFCC,” the commission wrote.

They claimed to be spy police officers with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, and have ‘assisted’ the Commission with information on the whereabouts of internet fraudsters within the town, but it was discovered that they only expose those who failed to meet their demand, while others willing and ready to play ball are shielded.

It was also discovered that they have made several millions of Naira sabotaging the Commission’s efforts and were living large off their fraudulent scheme.

A search conducted on the younger brother’s palatial residence along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway suggested that they may be living far above their means. Items found in the multi-million naira building also raised suspicion of the brothers’ possible involvement in other forms of criminal activities.

Items recovered from them include two cars, Honda Accord Crosstour and a Mercedes Benz GLK, different brands of mobile phones and charms.

Taking to her Instagram page, she shared a post which reads: “Awareness is victory”, and followed it with a lengthy post explaining how she felt about the case being thrown out, questioning the sanity of the country. Busola who expressed comprehension of the fact that the case was statute barred, stated that she took comfort in the fact that her decision to expose the controversial man of God and share her story, gave other women the courage to also speak out .

Read post below: “I have just been briefed by my lawyers on the court’s ruling in the matter before it pertaining to my stand against injustice represented by the reprehensible actions of Mr.

Biodun Fatoyinbo and, in light of the present and anticipated inquiries from friends, family and well-wishers, it is pertinent to convey my sincere reaction to said ruling. When I set about confronting one of my biggest fears and a horrible experience from my past, the first hurdle was finding the confidence to. Victims usually do not find a place for their voice, certainly not in our deeply conservative country where might is right and a virtue while innocence is a licence for abuse and disregard.

I had no illusions about the herculean task before me in not only openly confronting the man behind the mask but seeking remedy and sanction against him before the court.

I set out to ease the hurt, the sense of shame and abuse, the nightmares and traumas not by securing judicial victory only but by boldly sharing my story and calling out my transgressor robed in the vestiges of clerical power and pretense. I understood and accepted that by voicing out I was silencing the screams in the night. Ever since my story broke, the reactions were mixed but largely comforting. I noted that otherwise hushed victims of rape and sexual abuse were taking a cue from my stoicism in the face of ridicule and opposition and sharing their equally appalling stories. It is in this response that my victory was sealed, in knowing that one woman’s boldness could encourage others and challenge the institutionalized silence and the repression of the victim’s narrative by a culture of guilt-tripping, stigma and an inexplicable clamour to make irrational excuses for sexual offenders.

JAMB urges 2020 UTME prospective candidates acquire NIN

According to him, the call is to further encourage the candidates to do the needful ahead of the fast approaching period for the commencement of registration for the 2020 UTME any time soon.

“We want to further appeal and remind all prospective candidates on the need to get themselves registered centrally under the NIN scheme.

“They must consider this as compulsory if they intend to participate in the examination when the time comes.

“There is no other means of acquiring our registration documents for the examination except through the NIN and that is why we are calling on them now to intensify efforts in getting registered to avoid “had I known’’.

“No excuses will be entertained and that is the essence of this constant reminder so that nobody will be left out,’’ Benjamin told NAN.

He also appealed to parents to give their children and wards free hands in choosing their future career rather than impose theirs (parents) wishes on them.

According to him, often times children are under pressure to choose career just to satisfy the wish of their parents without considering the capacity of such children.

“Parents should stop forcing some particular careers on their children just because of some selfish reasons.

“They should be allowed to make their choices because this way, we get to see the best from them.

“Some after trying to satisfy the wish of their parents, end up not turning out well or use it positively.

“They end up taking to other vices because they are already feeling frustrated with life by not achieving that dream that they initially had,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Editorial Board of JAMBulletin has apologised to the public on its publication in the JAMBulletin of Monday, Oct. 28, 2019.

The board said the JAMBulletin, where a portion of the research innovation of a group of scholars was mutilated and given an erroneous impression that was carried by a section of the media with some news platforms having the caption: “UTME Candidates Won’t Score Zero, Even When Absent — JAMB’’.

“The research as presented by the scholars was on `Social Responsiveness in Applying Assessment Technicality: The Case of Standardisation of a Zero Score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Nigeria.”

The board said the paper which was a product of experts in educational assessment seeks to explain the much-misunderstood concept of transformation of score standardisation, which is a technical procedure for transforming candidates’ raw scores in different subjects taken by each candidate to a common scale with uniform metric or units, which is the globally accepted procedure applied in scoring in a large scale norm-referenced test.

It said that to address the public outcry against what is termed un-merited score, particularly for those who sit for examination but do not attempt any question, the experts came up with an idea to continue to transform the zero score of those who attempt the examination questions but get them wrong.

It added that there would be no transformation for those whose zero score is from lack of attempt or absent, rather the Board has introduced the concept of nominal zero score that would be notated as zero asterisked (0*).

“Candidates who are absent from the examination would continue to be marked absent without any score.

“What this means is that all absentees will be marked absent and without any score and those who sit for the examination but did not attempt any question will have zero score.

“The presentation admitted that the general public hardly understands nor rationalises why scores should be transformed, and this generates some controversies and throws up all sorts of unfounded arguments as have been done by the recent publication.

“It questions the basis for such transformation. Ill-informed non-education professionals consider transformation of scores as arbitrary allocation of un-merited scores or irrational deduction and reduction of hard-earned scores.

“This, therefore, means that all absent candidates and those who sit for the examination and did not attempt any question will score zero and their zero score not transformed.

Bizman accuses policemen of assault, extortion of $5,500 bitcoin

A businessman, Babatunde Williams, has accused some men of the Lagos State Police Command of extorting him of $5,500 worth of cryptocurrency (about N2m) around Lekki in the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state.
Williams told PUNCH Metro that he was returning home after inspecting a property around Lekki on Friday, May 28, 2021, when four policemen accosted him and demanded his vehicle papers, adding that he was complying with their order when two of the policemen forced themselves into his car.
While they were in his car, the businessman stated that the policemen handcuffed and forced him into a private vehicle and allegedly beat him till he gave the password to his Bitcoin wallet.
Williams alleged that the policemen withdrew $5,500 from his wallet and transferred it to the wallet of their accomplice, adding that they dropped him off after completing the transaction and fled.
He stated, “Around 3.15pm, I was coming out of the Lekki County Estate, where I went to supervise a project. I was in gridlock around the VGC when the policemen in a Toyota Sienna vehicle accosted me and ordered me to park.
“One of them in mufti asked to see my tinted glass permit and vehicle papers. I was still wondering who he was when he called an armed policeman in uniform. They were asking me to park and two of the four policemen entered my vehicle.
“They accused me of disobeying their orders. One of the cops asked me to make a U-turn and park by the North-West filling station. I was handcuffed on both hands and beaten inside my car. Later, they took me into the Sienna and drove me around without telling me where they were taking me to.
“They continued to beat me as they asked for the password of my phone. When I could no longer bear the pain, I had to unlock my phone. They saw my Bitcoin wallet and got someone, who provided them with a wallet, and transferred $5,500 (N2.2m) worth of Bitcoin.”
Williams, who lamented that he was robbed by the policemen, said the case was reported at the Maroko Police Division for investigation.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has said crude oil export proceeds plunged by 98 per cent in April, compared to March.

The NNPC said in a report that the total revenue from crude oil exports in April fell to N723m from the N35.72bn generated in March.

“No remittance to Federation Account in April for May 2021 FAAC due to recorded value shortfall resulting from difference between the landing cost and ex-coastal price of Premium Motor Spirit recorded in March 2021,” it said.

The corporation said it lifted 7.62 billion barrels of crude oil in March, compared to 10.79 billion in February, and exported 66.67 million barrels.

It said the country maintained its 1.52 million barrels per day production quota as agreed during the previous meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Domestic gas receipts for the month amounted to N5.13bn as oil and gas revenues totalled N156.37bn, a reduction of 30.38 per cent from March revenues.

“Feedstock valued at $54.6m was sold to the Nigeria LNG Limited during the period out of which $52.4m was received during the month, the difference being MCA obligations, gas reconciliation and credit notes,” the NNPC said.

According to the report, other receipts included $1.25m being miscellaneous receipts, gas and ullage fees and interest income was received in April 2021.”

It said, “The sum of N61.97bn was deducted out of the total March value shortfall of N111.97bn. This is to make funds available for Joint Venture cost recovery to sustain the existing production level. The balance of N50bn will be deducted in subsequent months.”

“In addition, April value shortfall of N126.29bn is to be deducted from May Federation proceeds in June 2021 FAAC meeting.”

Process To Prosecute 400 Boko Haram Sponsors Ongoing – AGF

The Federal Government on Monday said the process that would lead to the arraignment of about 400 alleged Boko Haram sponsors and financiers arrested in a nationwide operation in April was still ongoing.

The Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Dr Umar Gwandu, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent.

The businessmen, including bureau de change operators, were arrested in Kano, Borno, Abuja, Lagos, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kaduna and Zamfara in April.

The PUNCH had reported exclusively on May 4 that criminal charges bordering on terrorism were already being prepared against them as investigations continued into their nefarious activities.

The arrest of the men was sequel to the jailing of six Nigerians in the United Arab Emirates over allegations of terrorism financing.

In the May 4 report, Gwandu had said prosecution of the suspects “will commence as quickly as possible.”

He had hinted that charges would soon be preferred against the suspects.

When asked again on Monday about the stage of the planned trial, Gwandu said the process was still ongoing.

When asked further if the suspects had been charged, he simply replied “Journalists will be notified at an appropriate time.”

Those behind scrapping NYSC don’t mean well for Nigerians – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, says those clamouring for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps scheme did not mean well for the country.

Sultan said this on Monday in his palace, when the Batch A, Stream 2 corps members currently undergoing orientation exercise paid him a courtesy visit.

His Eminence explained that the NYSC scheme was established to foster unity among Nigerian youths.

“I heard there is a bill for the scrapping of NYSC scheme at the National Assembly, let me tell you those behind that bill did not mean well for this country.

“NYSC scheme is most needed now when Nigeria is divided along ethnic, religious background.

“I welcome corp members posted to Sokoto, the most peaceful state in Nigeria. You should look at the state as your second home. I enjoined you to respect the customs, and traditions of your host communities.

“I urged you to be security conscious while staying in Sokoto, you know there are security challenges now all over the world which we here have our own share, don’t stay outside late at night, if you have any challenges, contact your district head because they are like your father and guardian,” he added.

He also affirmed that no non-indigene in the state would be touched because a Northerner is killed in Owerri, Enugu, Aba, as another person cannot bear the punishment for what someone did elsewhere.

He further disclosed that the two major religions in Nigeria, Christian and Islam are against killing innocent people for no just cause saying, “life is sacred and no one has right to take it except God.”

Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Philip Enaberue, thanked Sultan for his unflinching support to the scheme in the state.

Enaberue further said as tradition, they were in the palace to pay homage to Sultan and seek his fatherly advice.

Residents obey IPOB sit-at-home order in South East states

Streets in many parts of the SouthEast states are currently deserted following the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB. The order is to mark two days of Remembrance for Biafra Day.

Many state governments and security agents last week asked residents of the state to ignore the order and go about their lawful businesses. The residents however ignored the assurance of both the government and the security agents and decided to stay in their homes.

Markets, banks, motor parks, and other commercial places, including schools and government offices, are under lock and key.
