The tiniest of margins stopped an injury time winner in Watford vs Tottenham

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho felt it was “unfair” his side only came away from Vicarage Road with a draw after they were held by resurgent Watford, who missed a penalty.

Troy Deeney saw his spot-kick saved, but the Hornets extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven matches.

Paulo Gazzaniga dived low to his right to deny the Watford captain following Jan Vertonghen’s handball in the second half.

But Mourinho told BT Sport afterwards: “I think we deserved to win this match. To lose would have been too harsh on the boys.”

Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster saved from Lucas Moura before half-time to thwart Spurs, who have now gone four league games without a win.

“The result is unfair. I think it would have been more unfair if we lost,” added Mourinho.

“We had the control of the game, especially in the first half. We arrived in dangerous positions. We created chances but we did not manage to score.”

Deeney had headed a good chance straight at Gazzaniga just before the break, while Abdoulaye Doucoure shot into the side-netting early in the second half.

Watford substitute Ignacio Pussetto, making his debut for the club, cleared an Erik Lamela effort off the line in stoppage time at the end of the match.

Winger Pussetto, a £7m signing from Udinese, had only been on the pitch for just over a minute when he slid in to hook away with almost the whole ball over the goalline.

The Hornets, who were bottom of the table when manager Nigel Pearson took over in December, are now 17th, while Spurs are seventh.

But it is Senegalese’s Mane who seems to be getting everyone’s attention this season due to his humility. Fans seemed extremely shocked to see Mane walk into the King Power Stadium with a broken screen after the photo made its way to Twitter. “Why would I want ten Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or two planes? What will these objects do for me and for the world? I was hungry, and I had to work in the field; I survived hard times, played football barefooted, I did not have an education and many other things, but today with what I earn thanks to football, I can help my people,” Mané explained. He added: “I built schools, a stadium, we provide clothes, shoes, food for people who are in extreme poverty. In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people in a very poor region of Senegal which contributes to their family economy. Messi reportedly tells Barca to sign Mbappe, 3 stars before agreeing new deal

  • Lionel Messi wants Barcelona to sign a couple of players before he can sign a new deal
  • The Argentine star’s contract is set for expiration, fuelling speculations about his future with the Camp Nou outfits
  • Messi believes his stay in Barcelona can only be extended provided the club buys four stars including Kylian Mbappe

Argentine forward, Lionel Messi, has reportedly issued Spanish giants Barcelona with a big condition as a prerequisite to his new deal with the club.

The Barca captain fuelled growing speculations surrounding his future with the Catalans after he reportedly told the management of the club to sign four big stars including French sensation Kylian Mbappe.

Messi’ contract is set for expiration and his father Jorge has come to the round table discussion again with Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu over another offer that may see the Argentine stay at Camp Nou for longer years.

And interestingly, the 32-year-old who is La Liga league top scorer with 13 goals, has told Barcelona to sign a couple of players into key positions in the January and next summer.

According to reports from Spain, the Argentine forward has tied his new contract to the condition that Barcelona get a player as good as Jordi Alba.

Messi also wants Barca to sign a potential replacement for ageing Sergio Busquets to complement Arturo Vidal and Frenkie de Jong’s works in the midfield.

The Argentine captain, who won his sixth Ballon d’Or award recently, also wants a potential forward like Mbappe who can bring more aggression and efficiency to his work in the attack-line.

But with the Frenchman heavily linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona will have to look for a potential stars like Liverpool ace Mohammed Salah and Jodan Sancho.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been named “sportsperson of the decade” by William Hill less than a month he clinched Ballon d’Or gong for the sixth time record.

The Barcelona star enjoyed a remarkable football year last season under Ernesto Valverde, guiding the Catalans to the domestic double.

In recognition of his incredible individual brilliance, the Argentine forward was awarded FIFA the Best gong in September.

Gary Neville interrupts Jose Mourinho interview with hilarious reaction to David de Gea’s howler… as Graeme Souness slams goalkeeper for ‘major mistake’ in Watford defeat

Gary Neville was left stunned after watching David de Gea’s error at Watford

Neville’s shocked reaction to the goal interrupted Jose Mourinho’s interview

De Gea somehow let a tame effort from Ismaila Sarr slip through his grasp

Troy Deeney scored the other goal as Watford beat Manchester United 2-0

A disbelieved Gary Neville interrupted Jose Mourinho’s pre-match interview with his reaction to David de Gea’s howler against Watford.

The United goalkeeper somehow allowed a tame effort from Ismaila Sarr to slip through his grasp and squeeze in at his near post, which saw the hosts take the lead.

Mourinho was being interviewed by Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Chelsea at the time of Watford’s opener, and attentions turned to Neville’s shocked reaction to the goal.

The former United man was left open-mouthed as he watched de Gea’s costly mistake and walked around the room with his hands on his face after seeing the replay of the goal.

Shreeves joked: ‘Now that your (Mourinho) an experienced pundit in the television studio, what’s your opinion on the unprofessional nature of Gary Neville, you and I are doing a professional interview and here he is falling to the floor in disgust, what does that tell you about his lack of standards?’

Mourinho replied: ‘I think Gary cannot hide his Manchester United connections but he is a very good pundit.’

Graeme Souness was left equally as stunned by de Gea’s ‘major mistake’.

He said: ‘Goals are scored by someone doing something clever or someone making a major mistake.

‘He’s taken his eye off the ball, its chopped into the ground but that’s an easy save. Is there spin on the ball?

‘It’s going forward towards him so have to put it down to that. He should be getting that. He’s a top goalkeeper and you feel for him. You never see him make mistakes like that but it is a howler.’

Troy Deeney added a second for Watford from the spot to secure victory in Nigel Pearson’s first game in charge.

Chelsea survive late Lille scare to make Champions League last 16

Chelsea made it into the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-1 win over Lille at Stamford Bridge, but they almost made a mess of what looked to be a comfortable night’s work.

Frank Lampard’s side needed a win to guarantee progression to the last 16 and they got just that, but it was not without a nervy ending in west London.

Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta gave the Blues a 2-0 lead at half-time and they looked in complete control until the final 15 minutes when their former player Loic Remy got on the score sheet for Lille.

It made for a nerve-shredding ending for Chelsea fans, but they did enough to get over the line and into Monday’s draw for the last 16.

The first half could not have been more comfortable for Chelsea as they strolled to a two-goal lead at the break.

The visitors offered almost nothing going forward and they were not standing too firm at the back either as Tammy Abraham opened the scoring 19 minutes in.

The England international tapped in from inside the six-yard box after good work from Willian on the right of the penalty area before driving the ball across goal.

It was a less likely scorer of the second goal as Azpilicueta nodded in from a corner at the near post after 35 minutes.

Willian again claimed the assist as the Brazilian whipped it in and the Spaniard had it very easy, unmarked to flick home.

It all looked incredibly straightforward for Lampard’s side and the second period appeared to be nothing but a formality, that was until the last 15 minutes when Lille found some verve from nowhere.

Perhaps it was complacency from the Blues or perhaps the French side they had nothing to lose as they went on the attack and former Blues striker Loic Remy found the back of the net with 12 minutes to go.

Jonathan Bamba got to the byline and picked out Remy 12 yards out, with the Frenchman crashing the ball off the underside of the bar with an emphatic finish.

Suddenly things were nervy for the home side, but they managed to regain control and limit Lille to little more possession.

Substitute Michy Batshuayi had a couple of good chances to put the game to bed for Chelsea but fluffed them.

Remy had one more good chance for the away side, bursting forward with the Chelsea defence inexplicably absent, but he could only manage a tame shot straight at Kepa.

‘Thumbs Up’ World Heavyweight Champion, Buhari Salutes Joshua On Comeback Victory

President Muhammadu Buhari has hailed World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua for reclaiming his titles in a rematch with Mexican, Andy Ruiz Jr.

Joshua, who suffered a stunning knockout defeat to Ruiz in New York in June, produced a masterclass to regain his IBF, WBA and WBO titles in emphatic fashion on Saturday.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, President Buhari saluted Joshua for bringing joy to millions of Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.

“The downfall of a man is truly not the end of his life.

There’s always another, and better day. This is a lesson we must all learn from you as a country.”

He noted that Nigeria has a lesson to learn from the world champion after such emphatic comeback.

President Buhari wished Joshua well as he seeks to bring more glory to Nigeria, and to the boxing profession.

Three months of partying affected me, says Ruiz as Joshua avenges loss

Andy Ruiz blamed three months of partying for his one-sided world heavyweight championship defeat to Anthony Joshua on Saturday, admitting he had failed to train seriously for his first title defence.

The 30-year-old Mexican-American stunned the world in June when he floored Joshua four times on the way to a sensational upset victory in their first fight at Madison Square Garden.

Ruiz had drawn gasps of disbelief on Friday when the weigh-in revealed he had ballooned to 283 pounds (128.4 kilograms), fully 15 pounds heavier than his fighting weight six months ago.

Ruiz’s poor conditioning was ruthlessly exposed by Joshua on Saturday, who nimbly outboxed the chubby champion.

“Three months of partying and celebrating affected me, what can I say?” Ruiz told reporters after the fight.

Asked what he’d do differently if granted a rematch with Joshua, Ruiz replied: “Listen to my coach. Listen to my dad. And take it more seriously.”

Ruiz, who was granted a ritzy homecoming parade in his Californian hometown of Imperial following his win in June, said he had started his training camp for the rematch too late.

Trainer Manny Robles had wanted Ruiz back in the gym in July. Ruiz only started his camp in September.

“I’m OK, I’m just a little disappointed,” Ruiz said. “I should have listened to them. I tried to do the training on my own. I should have listened to them more. There’s no excuses…the partying and all that stuff got the best of me.”

Robles meanwhile refused to point the finger at Ruiz.

“You’ve got to be with your fighter 100 per cent,” he said. “I’m not the first coach where situations happen in camp. I have to apologise to him because this is a team effort and when you don’t win it hurts. It always hurts.”

Ruiz, however, was able to take encouragement from the fight, insisting he would be a different proposition in a third encounter.

“For being out of shape I did pretty good, I took all his shots,” he said. “I got him a few times … If we’d have gone toe to toe … For the trilogy I know I’m going to be a lot better.

“Being overweight, I wasn’t fluid enough, I wasn’t moving the way I wanted to move. I think if I’m lighter I’m going to let my hands go and be a completely different fighter.”

Chelsea free to sign players in January as transfer ban is reduced

Chelsea are free to sign players in January after their transfer ban was reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Premier League club was unable to strengthen its squad in the summer after FIFA ruled they had breached regulations relating to the recruitment of young players.

Chelsea appealed to CAS, who have now halved the two-window ban, meaning manager Frank Lampard will now have the option of utilising the clubs transfer funds come January.

The Blues have made a solid start to life under the stewardship of the club’s all-time record goalscorer and are currently fourth in the Premier League following Wednesday’s win over West Ham, while they are well placed to qualify for the knockout phase of the Champions League.

Lampard has re-energised the club following the departure of Maurizio Sarri by placing is faith in a crop of emerging academy graduates including the likes of Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James.

Despite the progress that has undoubtedly been made, Lampard will likely relish the opportunity to spend next month with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha understood to be among his primary targets.

Zaha was coveted by both Arsenal and Everton during the summer, but remained with the Eagles despite handing in a formal transfer request but leading agent Federico Pastorello earlier this week  sparked speculation the former Manchester United star could be on the move come January.

‘Another player I also think about is Wilfried Zaha. I think he really deserves a new challenge and a top club, because he is really a top player,’ said the Italian agent.

‘It is surprising me because I read about a possible move in the summer but he stayed again. But this season he is proving that he is very focused and concentrated. So think he could be another good opportunity in the January market.

‘The January market can be really calm. As the number of transfers there is about one third as many than in the summer. But there are some very good and interesting opportunities for the clubs that sell, because maybe a club really needs that player and is ready to pay a little bit more because of emergency.’
